The killing of the two suspected robbers late last week who victimized a businessman in Danao town has earned accolade not only from top police authorities but also from many people. The police team that pursued the fleeing robbers and later killed them got commendations for a job well done.
Was it a job well done? With the killing of the suspected robbers, was the case considered closed? Many people said so. In fact, they ventured to add that the robbery has been solved. Yes, solved because the suspected robbers were killed. And they could not victimize anymore.
But precisely because they were killed, they could not tell their side of the story anymore. They could not tell the authorities how the crime was committed. They could not tell us who their cohorts were. They could not tell us anymore if they really did it. They could not tell us if they also did the other rob incidents in other towns. Because they brought to their grave the story of their lives. All we got is the police version, not their version.
This is the reason why it is imperative that a probe should be conducted, not only to ascertain that the rules of engagement were really observed but also to send the message to all and sundry that observance of the law and law enforcement are primordial!
