Battle of first impression

Early on in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, there were already reports that public interest has been dwindling. It was reported that many people got bored watching the proceedings. Two things were apparent here.

One is utter frustration. Many people thought the prosecution panel was going for a big bang. Something that would be too glaring and too clear as to leave no room for doubt on the culpability of the Chief Justice. But the big bang went pfftt because the supposed “damning evidence” was nowhere to be seen. The prosecution panel now admits there is no proof as to Corona’s alleged ownership of some 45 real estate properties. The SALN and ITR brouhaha was just that, they were too good to be true.

The other thing was the terribly irritating but highly effective approach of lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas. He raised objections to practically all questions propounded by the prosecution panel during the direct examination of prosecution witnesses. This is routine for practicing lawyers but blatantly frustrating for laymen. Loss of interest is automatic for regular viewers and the lack of preparation and trial savvy of the prosecution team become evident.

The hasty preparation and submission of the articles of impeachment to the Senate is now taking its deadly toll. Serious questions as to the competence of the prosecution panel to secure a conviction are also being raised. The initial “victory” of the prosecution team led by Cong. Neil Tupas when they started displaying “damning evidence” during press conferences has been dissipated during the impeachment trial. The feeling of deceit and deception now lurks in the mind of the people.

True enough, the trial is still far from over. But the prosecution is already on the verge of completely losing the battle that really matters – the battle of first impression. Unless the prosecution can recover in the nick of time – by presenting clear proof and regaining public interest on the trial – Chief Justice Renato Corona may just end up with the big laugh!
